NATURE, ORIGINE ET RÉPARTITION DE LA PHASE ARGILEUSE DE LA LAGUNE DE NADOR (MAROC NORD ORIENTAL)
Abstract
ABSTRACT. Nature, origin and distribution of the clayey phase of the Nador lagoon (NE of Morocco). The Nador lagoon is located in the eastern Rif, and is surrounded by geological formations with various facies. The clay fraction of the lagoon is composed, in decreasing order, of illite, kaolinite, smectite and chlorite. Smectite prevails in the northeast of the lagoon and chlorite dominates in the southwest. In the watershed, illite and chlorite are found in all the sedimentary rocks, and they abound in the Kebdana Jurassic marls and in the Bni Bou Ifrour Jurassic schists. Weathering of different geological substrata develops kaolinite, whereas Miocene marls and saprolite from the Gourougou volcanic rocks liberate smectite. The clay fraction of the fluviatile suspended matter is rich in illite and shows an enrichment of smectite from south to north. In addition to this continental contribution, there are also aerosols, encompassing the principal clay minerals and displaying seasonal variation in relative distribution. The distribution of clay minerals has not changed much within the past 3000 years. The evolution of the basin fill is linked to lagoon dynamics, controlled by the changing position of the exit channel.
