Abstract

Description is given of the processes of ionisation, recombination and charge transfer affecting the upper atmosphere during an aurora.  The relations describing the concentration in ions and electrons are established in the case of the quasi-equilibrium.  The results obtained are illustrated for a typical aurora of I.B.C. III intensity.  Finally, the approximations used in the calculation are discussed in the light of the results.
