Abstract

Granulite facies rocks contain water deficient assemblages which occur in high grade metamorphic rocks (catazone) if PH2O is lower than Ptotal . A specific type of inclusionscontaining high density CO2 rich fluids is abundant in most samples from all over the world and interpreted as an evidence of a water free and carbonic (mainly CO2 , but possibly hydrocarbons) rich fluid phase during granulite facies metamorphism. The source of CO2 is essentially juvenile (upper mantle). From the location and features of granulite facies rocks, a model of the distribution of fluids within the continental crust is proposed, CO2 being concentrated in the lower part of the crust between Conrad and Mohorovičič discontinuities.
