This special volume of Geologica Belgica, entitled “Avalonia-Moesia: Early Palaeozoic orogens in the Trans-European Suture Zone combines papers of which the results were presented at the Avalonia-Moesia Symposium & Workshop, held at Gent/Ronse, 9-11 October 2004. Both the venue and this special volume are a direct result of the bilateral cooperation project BIL01-34 of the Flemish Community, Science Department (Ministerie van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap, Afdeling Wetenschappen), entitled “Dating with Chitinozoa and palaeogeographical affinity of Palaeozoic terranes SE of the East European Platform and comparison of the structural geology in the NW of the Trans-European Suture Zone (TESZ) in the Anglo-Brabant deformation zone (Belgium) and in the SE of the TESZ in the North Dobrogea Massif (Romania), between Flanders (Jacques Verniers, UGent & Manuel Sintubin, K.U.Leuven) and Romania (Antoneta Seghedi & Marioara Vaida, IGR, Bucharest). The financial support of the Flemish Community is much appreciated.
We also would like to thank all the contributors to the meeting and to this volume, and we are particularly grateful to the referees of the papers included in this volume. In addition, we are most grateful to Thijs Vandenbroucke, Jan Vanmeirhaeghe, Nelly Reynaert, Koen Van Noten, DĂ©bra Lammertyn and Maarten Decleene for the logistics and administration, and to Jean-Clair Duchesne for the assistance with the final editorial work. Finally, a warm thank you to all the participants.
