Abstract

A part of the North Frisian Wadden Sea (Northern Germany) has been chosen as study area: Bathymetrical maps (1959, 1986 and 2007) and multispectral SPOT satellite images covering the period from 1986 to 2007 were studied in order to determine the environmental impact of a major dike construction, completed in 1987, cutting off more than 3.000 ha of salt marshes and tidal flats from the natural tidal influence. The first study showed that the erosion of the tidal channels in proximity of the embankment has diminished significantly after the completion of the dike, which can be attributed to the reduction of their watershed. The second study aimed at the evolution of the vegetation after the embankment. The natural pioneer vegetation of the salt marshes has been progressively replaced by glycophile vegetation. This evolution – known as ecological succession – was evidenced through classification and the use of a perpendicular vegetation index (PVI) applied to SPOT satellite images.
