Abstract

The territorial structures of Kasayi are explained through an examination of the major economic and socio-political changes that took place over the last forty years. During this time, the region underwent a social reorganization due to the role ethno-tribal forces played in various administrative restructuring initiatives. On the other hand, the liberalization of the diamond trade and the decline in overland transportation played a role in the reorganization of trading patterns. The importance of the triangle Kananga - Mbujimayi - Mwene-Ditu as the hub of economic development in Kasayi is illustrated by the concentration of infrastructures in specific areas as well as the rapid urbanization. However, the urbanization phenomenon is not equally spread throughout the region. The Southwest, with a focus on Tshikapa, seems to be the secondary pool. The North is in decline and isolated.
