Abstract

This study proposes an approach based on a multicriteria analysis of the banks of the Lièvre River (Québec) which are affected at various degrees by fluvial erosion. The methodological approach rests on the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) with multicriterion analysis where different variables involved in bank erosion (nature of deposits, height and slope of banks, channel pattern, land uses are weighed. The analysis allows us to elaborate a map of bank erosion sensitivity (strong, medium and weak). The map realised by stacking five maps and by adding the value of parameter (ponderation) obtained with the multicriterion analysis. The major bank erosion forms observed at Lièvre River are the undercutting of the lower bank, shallow slips (by gravity) and landslides in clay height slopes generally caused by flows forces, water waves (induced by wind or motorized boats) and ice. Among the studied researches, about 16% of banks present a strong sensitivity to the riverbank erosion, 60% a medium sensitivity and the rest of banks (24%) are considered as having a weak sensitivity. Finally, the map on the erosion of banks appears as an additional tool of help in the management decision and regional development.
