Abstract

Extracts of Impatiens balsamina L. have been purified by acetone precipitation.

Purified extracts showing IAA-oxidase activity with DCP and hydrogen peroxide exhibit peroxidase activity on gaiacol and on several peroxidase substrates.

They show no polyphenoloxidase activity.

It seems highly probable that a specific enzyme is responsible for the oxidation of hydroxynaphtalenic compounds.

In leaf tissues, peroxidase and IAA-oxidase activities do not run parallel during incubation time, but only when inhibitors are present, and are therefore considered to be one enzyme system. A possible interpretation of the results is that inhibitors are able to form complexes with the enzyme.
