Abstract

The purpose of this present work is to study the yield of the essential oil of an aromatic and endemic plant Artemisia mesatlantica. Additionally, we intend to determine the chemical composition of the essential oil stemming from this species, as well as the determination of its antibacterial and antifungal activity towards seven microorganisms. Our samples result from oriental Morocco, mainly from region between Ifrane and Boulmane. Sixty constituents were identified by chromatographic analysis (GC and GC/MS) in essential oil of this plant among which 3 are preponderant: β–thujone, camphene and camphor. The yield in essential oil of the Artemisia mesatlantica is in the order of 0.5% (mg/100g). The essential oil of Artemisia mesatlantica showed a significant antimicrobial activity against all three tested fungi and four species of bacteria. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first of its kind.
