Abstract

Several Moroccan cities, Essaouira in particular, are known for the artisanal processing of sawdust of Tetraclinis articulata (Vahl) Masters mainly used in marquetry and cabinet making. The industry generates huge amounts of sawdust that are burnt to serve primarily as an energy source for the Moorish baths. This work is focused on the valorization of this byproduct in the production of essential oils, the chemical characterization and the study of the antibacterial and antifungal activity of these species. The yield of essential oils of sawdust is 1.63%. It is relatively high compared to some plants that are used industrially as a source of essential oils. These oils are composed mainly of α-acorenol (20.9%), cedrol (17.9%), totarol (8.8%), α-cedrene (8.7%), and β-acorenol (7.4%). The essential oil is very active in vitro against the bacteria Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus and Micrococcus luteus and the fungi Penicillium parasiticus, Aspergillus Niger and Trametes pini.
