Abstract

This paper shows the importance of Riemann-Stieltjes sums in the development of integral calculus, from the method of exhaustion to recent integration theories.  Contributions of Fermat, Leibniz, Euler, Cauchy, Riemann, Stieltjes, Kurzweil and Henstock are described.
