Abstract

The origin of the Sambre-Meuse axis. The old hypotheses on the origin of the Sambre-Meuse furrow are rapidly reviewed. The eventuality of an evaporitic origin for this furrow is then considered, but the weak development of the Dinantian evaporites in the Namur basin, east of Charleroi, and the own features of the Sambre-Meuse axis enable us to reject this explanation unambiguously. As for the classical hypothesis of a recent rejuvenation of the Namur syncline, it seems incompatible with the Neogene regional tectonic framework. It is then proposed to see at the origin of the Sambre-Meuse furrow a structural feature formed during the middle Miocene: this feature would correspond to a sinistral shear motion between the Caledonian Brabant massif and the Variscan Ardenne domain.
