Abstract

Within the Stavelot Massif the Xhoris Fault is marked by lens of red beds and conglomerate at the base of the Gedinnian. East of Werbomont this fault strikes N-S; the fault plane and the base of the Gedinnian are nearly vertical in this place. From Ru de Grand Mont onwards the fault returns to an E-W strike and to its original slight southward dip.

Several faults of the northern margin of the Malmedy Graben influenced the extent of Gedinnian rocks within the Massif. The northernmost of these faults has shifted the outcrop of the Xhoris Fault northeastwards. In the woods of Rahier a lens of Gedinnian is formed ; this is limited southwards by a thrust fault. This structure is identical to that found where the Xhoris Fault passes east of Werbomont.

The Bra Fault, which is characterised by a displacement of the Salmian above the overturned folds of the Gedinnian, can be followed northeastwards where an identical structure has been observed east of the Lienne.

Consequently, it seems illogical to relate the Xhoris Fault to the Bra Fault.
